Home to about four million people, Bali is one of the 17,000 islands of the Indonesian archipelago and is located between the islands of Java and Lombok. With spectacular beaches, world-class surfing, stunning temples and a richly artistic culture, Bali is the number one tourist destination in Indonesia which is why you need comprehensive Bali maps to help you find your way to the best attractions! The province of Bali includes the central island of Bali and smaller islands such as Serangan Island, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida.

A volcanic island, Bali’s coast is mostly black or white sand beaches, although there are shoreline areas of mangrove forests and steep cliffs. All of the north shore and Jimbaran Bay are safe for swimming, though flag markers should always be obeyed due to dangerous rip tides. Central farming areas of the island are verdant regions, with rice paddies and exquisitely sculpted rice terraces being the predominant agricultural features. All of Bali’s mountains are volcanic, with Mount Agung the tallest at 3,142 metres, and Mount Batur the most active. The most recent volcanic eruptions on Bali were in the 1960’s.

The Balinese are primarily Hindu, and religion is heavily incorporated into everyday life, from the tiny daily leaf-wrapped offerings called canang sari to the spectacular temples guarding the island’s rugged coastline. The traditions of Hinduism are intrinsically entwined with the sculpture, theatre, music and dance of Bali, from elaborate statues of Hindu deities to exotic shadow puppet shows to dramatic traditional dances.

Balinese is the official language, though the vastly different Bahasa Indonesia is the lingua franca of the island. In tourist areas, English and other foreign languages are widely spoken.
